Most amateur golfers hit the driving range, pull out the driver and proceed to smack a bucketful of balls as far and straight as possible. While it might be fun, it's not necessarily the most efficient way to improve your game at the range. The best way to practice on the driving range, according to golf instruction experts like Donald Crawley, is to go with a specific purpose in mind.

Step 1

Take only a few "problem" clubs to the range instead of your whole bag. Doing so will help you resist the temptation to pull out your favorite 3-wood and start blasting balls down the range just because you can.

Step 2

Focus your practice on a specific aspect of your swing. Instead of trying to work on your whole game, concentrate on keeping your head down, making a full rotation or improving your follow-through, but not all three.

Step 3

Pick a target out on the course to hit at instead of blindly hitting the ball as far as you can. When you're out on the course, you're trying to hit a target such as the fairway or the green, so do the same when you practice.

Step 4

Practice combination shots that you tend to use during a regular round. For example, if you tend to hit your hybrid club in the fairway and follow it up with your pitching wedge around the green, practice using those two clubs in succession, according to "Golf Tips Magazine."

Step 5

Focus on the clubs you most often use during a round and don't waste time on clubs you rarely use. If you'd normally pull out your 3-iron rather than your 5-wood during a typical round, spend time perfecting your 3-iron instead of wasting too much time trying to figure out your fairway wood.
