Skateboarders apply grip tape to their boards to improve traction. This sandpaper-like sheet helps your shoes grip the deck of the skateboard instead of sliding off the edges. The easy step of putting grip tape on your skateboard should be done before you start learning tricks, because successfully performing tricks requires the ability to keep your feet on the board.

Step 1

Prepare your board and the grip tape. All skateboard hardware, including wheels, trucks and screws, must be removed before putting on grip tape. If your skateboard deck is dirty, clean it so that the adhesive tape will stick firmly to the top of the deck. Place your skateboard on a flat surface before trying to apply grip tape. Do not try to cut the grip tape before applying it to your board. Instead, leave it in a large piece as it came from the skate shop. Gently peel the backing off the sandpaper-like sheet of skateboard grip tape, exposing the sticky adhesive side.

Step 2

Apply grip tape to the skateboard. The adhesive on skateboard grip tape is very sticky, so work slowly. You won't be able to remove the tape easily if you apply it incorrectly. The sheet of grip tape should cover all edges of the board, with some excess that you will trim off later. Lower the tape down to your skateboard deck. Check its positioning, and then begin pressing it down onto the deck, working from the middle of the skateboard outwards. Working slowly allows you to avoid trapping large air bubbles under the grip tape.

Step 3

Apply extra pressure in critical areas of the board. This includes the edges of the board, the nose, the tail, and areas where you will be installing the trucks and wheels. These areas are more likely to peel as you use your skateboard. Apply extra pressure now to be sure that the grip tape is stuck firmly to the skateboard deck.

Step 4

Cut around the edges of the board. The grip tape should overhang the sides of your board. Press around the edges of the deck, tracing it onto the tape. Now, very carefully trim the excess grip tape using a razor blade. Take your time to avoid leaving rough edges. Once you have trimmed the edges, run the edge of the screwdriver around them to seal the edge of the grip tape to your skateboard deck. According to El Skate Shop, some pro skateboarders prefer to rub their skateboard edges on the ground instead of sealing the edges with a screwdriver. If you notice air bubbles trapped by the grip tape, now is the time to carefully pop them with the razor blade.

Step 5

Install your skateboard hardware. The grip tape covers the holes you will need to attach the skateboard hardware. Use the screwdriver to create holes in the grip tape where you will install your trucks and any other necessary hardware.
