How to Apply Rosemary Oil to Natural Hair

Rosemary is a popular herb that is used in traditional Mediterranean cooking. In addition to its culinary benefits, rosemary oil is effective in treating indigestion, muscle and joint pain, alopecia, dandruff, promotes hair growth and improves memory and concentration, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Rosemary oil is not a substitute for medical treatment; consult with your health-care professional to discuss any potential risks.

Step 1

Combine the rosemary leaves and olive oil in a glass bowl. Heat the mixture in the microwave until warm, approximately 30 to 45 seconds.

Step 2

Strain the mixture with a colander to remove rosemary leaves. If you notice the rosemary leaves broke off into smaller particles, insert a paper coffee filter into the colander prior to straining the oil.

Step 3

Apply the rosemary oil to entire to your scalp with a cotton ball. Massage your scalp with your fingers to help increase the blood circulation. Use your fingers to work the oil down to the ends of your hair.

Step 4

Wrap your head with the plastic wrap first and then the towel. Leave the wrap on for approximately 15 minutes.

Step 5

Remove the towel and plastic wrap.

Step 6

Wash your hair with your shampoo of choice. Repeat this step if necessary to remove the rosemary oil from your hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after application of rosemary oil or use gloves. Rosemary oil has the potential to cause an allergic reaction. Prior to application on the scalp, test a small spot and watch for symptoms such as rash, inflammation and hives. Rosemary oil treatments can be applied twice monthly, or when your hair needs to be rehydrated, according to the Pioneer Thinking website.
  • Rosemary oil is not for oral consumption and can be toxic. Prior to applying the oil to your scalp, check the temperature of the oil. The oil should be warm to the touch.
