After you get your first soft contacts, you may be nervous about inserting and removing them. It may take a little practice for you to perfect the technique, but you will soon be removing your contacts without a problem. It is important that you follow your eye doctor's instructions very carefully to protect your eyes. Once you have worn the contacts for the amount of time your doctor recommends, take them out and disinfect them.
Step 1
Wash your hands well with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly. Make sure your hands are free of lotions and creams, and avoid using moisturizing soap that could leave a film on your hands.
Step 2
Look upwards into a mirror to expose the lower part of the white of your eye.
Step 3
Pull your lower eyelid down slightly with your middle finger if necessary, and gently place your index finger on the contact lens.
Step 4
Drag the lens down to the white of your eye, and use your thumb and index finger to carefully grab it and remove it from the eye. It should bunch up easily once it is on the white of your eye.
Tips and Warnings
- When you take your contacts out of the case and place them in your eyes, clean the case with contact solution and dry it so it will be ready to store your contacts when you take them out. If you have long fingernails or if you find it hard to grab the lens, try rolling it all the way down to your lower eyelid, recommends Obrig Contact Lenses. This should push the lens out of your eye so you can easily grab it.
- Never reuse contact solution or use water or homemade lens cleaners on your contacts, warns the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This can cause infection and serious eye problems. Closely follow the instructions that your eye doctor gives you. If you improperly wear, clean or store your contacts, major complications can develop.
