Hand wraps, a vital part of boxing gear, protect and cushion your skin from injury when punching bags and pads, which can be rough enough to scrape skin. They also provide extra protection underneath boxing gloves. Wraps will stretch out after a while, so make them fairly secure when you first wrap your hands. Otherwise, you run the risk of the wrap loosening enough to fall off your hand. You should still be able to form a fist, and don't make them so tight you have no circulation. Wraps will not provide total protection, and you must learn proper technique and safety precautions from a qualified boxing instructor.

Step 1

Loop the thumb loop over your thumb and draw the wrap back across the back of your hand.

Step 2

Wrap around your wrist two to four times.

Step 3

Bring the wrap up and around your thumb, in between the thumb and index finger, and around to wrap the entire thumb. Pull the wrap across the back of your hand and rewrap the wrist. BoxingGyms.com suggests wrapping your thumb a second and third time at this point.

Step 4

Bring the wrap up diagonally from the base of the thumb to the edge of your knuckles by your little finger. Spread your fingers as you wrap your knuckles two or three times. Bring the wrap back down and wrap your wrist. Some wraps are long enough to be wrapped between your fingers, while others are too short. At this point, if you are using a shorter wrap, go back and forth between wrapping your knuckles and wrapping your wrist for the rest of the wrap's length until you reach the end with the hook-and-loop fastener.

Step 5

Draw the wrap up and between your little and ring fingers if you are using a longer wrap. Bring the wrap down under your thumb, back up to the little finger's knuckle and around all of your knuckles. Draw it back down under the thumb and back up, this time in between your ring and middle fingers. Wrap the knuckles again. Repeat the procedure for your middle and index fingers.

Step 6

Continue wrapping between your wrist and knuckles until you reach the hook-and-loop fastener.

Step 7

Wrap the final bit of the wrap around your wrist and fasten it.
