The hair cuticle is the outer layer of each individual follicle. This layer is made up of scale-like cells that protect the hair from root to tip from environmental hazard. Chemical processing and improper hair care breaks down this protective layer, leaving your hair susceptible to breakage and damage. Keeping the hair cuticles moisturized and intact will ensure a healthy, luxurious mane all year-long.

Step 1

Groom your hair with a boar bristle brush, especially when the air is cool and dry. According to CareFair.com, boar bristle brushes eliminate static electricity in the hair than can damage cuticles. Rubbing your hand with a fabric softener sheet and running your hands through your hair may also cut down on static.

Step 2

Cleanse your hair daily or every other day with a gentle shampoo. Shampoos containing harsh ingredients are more likely to cause breakdown of the hair cuticles. Gentle shampoos are pH balanced to protect your hair and add shine while keeping hair cuticles healthy.

Step 3

Apply a deep conditioning treatment once a week for chronically dry hair and sun-damaged locks. According to CareFair.com, the sun fries the hair cuticle, leaving you with damage and breakage. Trimming damaged hair and applying a deep conditioner will help reverse sun damage and restore moisture to the cuticle.

Step 4

Wear a hat during sunny days to prevent UV exposure to the hair cuticle. According to the TeensHealth website, the sun, wind and humidity--especially when combined--are not healthy for your hair cuticles. A hat protects your hair from the damaging elements and allows your cuticles to remain healthy.

Step 5

Rinse your hair with cold water to promote shine and lock in much needed moisture. According to CareFair.com, cold water seals the cuticles, promoting the health and luster of your hair.

Step 6

Allow your hair to air-dry after cleansing. Heat from blow dryers damages your hair cuticle by drying it out and causing the protective cells to shed. According to TeensHealth, limiting heat styling and over-the-top hairstyles will allow your cuticles to remain in perfect health.
