Gripping the golf club correctly is the first step to a solid swing. If your hands aren't in the right position, it will affect everything from how you take the club back to the angle of the clubface at impact. Once you understand the basics of a technically sound golf grip, you can experiment until you are comfortable with your grip. The right grip will help you start to hit the ball longer and straighter.
Step 1
Rest the head of the club on the ground so the shaft is pointing toward your body and the clubface is pointing toward your target.
Step 2
Open your left hand, and rest the golf club grip in the palm of your hand. The top of the club shaft should rest on the thick part of your palm below your little finger and move diagonally across your hand to the middle of your index finger. Reverse these directions if you are a left-handed golfer.
Step 3
Keep your fingers spread open, and bring your right hand over so that the little finger on your right hand passes under the index finger on your left hand.
Step 4
Align both thumbs so that they are pointing down the shaft and toward the clubhead.
Step 5
Close your hands around the club. Grip the club firmly but not too firmly. Imagine you were holding a live bird. You want your grip firm enough that you don't let the bird fly away but not so firm that you crush the bird.
Tips and Warnings
- If you feel more comfortable, you can unlock your fingers and hold the club in both hands without interlocking your right little finger and left index finger.
