Maui is a popular destination in the Hawaiian Islands because of its pristine beaches and varied landscape. Maui is known as the Valley Isle for the lush green areas that plunge down from the dormant Haleakala Crater. The second largest island in the Hawaiian chain, Maui is approximately 728 square miles with plenty of it open to horeseback riding.
Makena, Maui
The rugged and wild area of the island that includes Makena is along Maui's southwest shore. This part of the island encompasses working ranch lands, Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve and beautiful beaches. Big Beach and Little Beach located along the Maui coast in Makena are popular white sand beaches.
Western Riding
If you enjoy western-style trail rides, you can do that at Makena Stables, a locally owned and operated stable run by Maui-born owner Pat Borge. He considers himself to be a paniola, a Hawaiian cowboy, and loves to personally guide small groups of riders through the Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve. If you take either a morning or a sunset tour, you'll take in the amazing views from La Perouse Bay. Makena Stables also offers private tours. Riders at Makena Stables must be over 13 years old and under 205 lbs.
Working Ranch
If you want to see real paniolo at work, go to Makena Ranch, part of the picturesque 1800-acre Makena Beach and Golf Resort. In partnership with Maui's Mendez Ranch, Makena Ranch offers "The Ultimate Paniolo Experience." You'll start along the slope of Mt. Haleakala, where you will see miles of ocean and neighboring islands. You can mingle with working paniolo as they work their cattle. Like Makena Stables, the groups are limited to six riders, but Makena Ranch can accommodate younger horseback riders 7 years and up.
Considerations
Maui riding stables make an effort to match horses and riders appropriately for everyone's safety and enjoyment during the trail ride. Youwill need to accurately convey your riding ability, as stables can accommodate beginners all the way to experts. The rides can be strenuous and last anywhere from one to two hours, so it is important to be in good physical shape for this activity.
Attire
Western-style riding on working ranches doesn't mean riders need to wear chaps and boots, but it does mean you should dress appropriately. Both Makena Stables and Makena Ranch recommend long pants and closed toed shoes. A hat is not a bad idea and sunscreen is a must.
