Hot wax is an effective way to remove hair, but it is not without its disadvantages. Waxing can be painful, especially if not done correctly. You might overheat the wax and burn your skin, or suffer irritation from incorrect technique. While some waxing, such as bikini waxes, should be left to the pros, using hot wax hair removal at home on your legs, arms, stomach and face can save you money. Just make sure you follow all manufacturer instructions concerning the heating and application of the hot wax.
Step 1
Wait until your hair is at least 1/4 of an inch long, suggests TeensHealth. The wax needs enough hair to grip onto in order to remove it and hot wax will be ineffective with hair that is too short.
Step 2
Take a dose of ibuprofen a 1/2 hour prior to waxing. The process of using hot wax can be painful for a short while after the hair removal, and the ibuprofen can help you manage the pain more effectively.
Step 3
Read the instructions included with the hot wax kit that you've purchased. Make sure that you understand them completely, says Glamour magazine. There will be instructions pertaining to the heating process that are especially important. Some wax kits will require you to microwave the wax, while others will require you to hold the packet of wax under hot water to warm and smooth the wax for easy application.
Step 4
Test the wax with your finger before you apply it to a large patch of skin. If it feels too warm, wait a minute or two for the wax to cool. Using a spatula or orange stick, spread the wax in the direction of hair growth. Work in small, thin patches, covering a space that is as wide and half the length of your cloth strips.
Step 5
Lay a cloth strip over the wax, leaving at least 2 to 3 inches of excess fabric at the bottom. Press the cloth down two times, and then grasp the bottom of the strip. In one swift movement, tear the cloth strip in the direction opposite to the hair growth. Never go over the same area of skin more than three times, warns Marie Claire magazine. It could cause irritation and ingrown hairs.
Step 6
Wrap two or three ice cubes in a washcloth and apply to the just-waxed area. It will help to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Continue the process until the entire area is hair-free.
