In the fight against cellulite, Endermologie is one of the more hi-tech treatments to rid the body of the unsightly fat. Used in France in the 1980's, Endermologie hit the US when it was approved by the FDA in 1998. While there is still some question on how effective the treatment is, it remains a popular solution in reducing the appearance of cellulite.

About

Endermologie is an anti-cellulite massage that uses FDA approved machines that were originally used to help burn victims with their scars. Only available through a dermatologist's or plastic surgeon's office, Endermologie involves rolling a vacuum-like machine with rollers over the body. The massage and suction of the machine repositions the fat back under the connective tissues, reduces body measurements and increases circulation, ultimately giving the body a firmer, smoother appearance.

Costly Treatment

Compared to other cellulite treatments, Endermologie is a costly procedure. Initial treatment requires between 15 and 25 visits and can cost $750 on the low end, and upward of $1,750 on the high end, for a treatment package. Individual sessions can range between $75 and $200 and it's recommended that you have monthly treatments after the initial sessions to maintain your results. There are no set prices for Endermologie, so costs stand to vary based on location and expertise of the endermologist.

Painless Process

Endermologie is a non-invasive procedure that is painless for the patient. It is often described as being pleasurable and relaxing. According to CelluliteUSA.com, a leading site on cellulite reduction treatments, the "...majority of patients compare receiving Endermologie to receiving a very deep massage and find the treatment very relaxing. Moreover, the intensity of the rolling action can be adjusted to achieve your personal comfort level."

Temporary Fix

Endermologie was the first cellulite treatment approved by the FDA as "temporarily improving the appearance of cellulite." Endermologie yields a temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite and won't last unless you continue with follow-up sessions after your initial treatment sessions.

Mixed Results

While practitioners of Endermologie tout its FDA approval, and some studies show the effectiveness of the treatment, there is other research that contradicts those findings. Studies posted in the peer-reviewed journals, Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, show that Endermologie has no measurable effect on cellulite. One British study published in the September 1999 issue of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that one-third of the women in the study said they noticed a difference in their cellulite, but before and after photographs only showed minor objective improvements.
