The outermost layer of your skin is called the epidermis and is what will noticeably peel when exposed to one of several factors. Peeling skin is unsightly, itchy and at some levels dangerous for your health. The cause of peeling cannot only be traced to overexposure by the sun but also to a wide variety of cancerous, infectious and allergic factors, according to the Mayo Clinic. Once you determine the reason your skin is peeling, there are different creams that you can apply to remedy your epidermal layer.

Moisturizing Cream

When your skin is overexposed to sunlight or other ultraviolet light, your body's protecting agent, melanin, ceases to have its normal effect. Melanin is a determining factor in pigment or skin color. When a person has no melanin in her body, it is referred to as albinism. Once the sun rays penetrate your skin to a level where melanin can't combat it, a side effect of peeling can be seen after exposure. MedlinePlus recommends using any moisturizing cream to help with peeling but advises staying away from products that contain benzocaine, lidocaine or petroleum.

Clotrimazole and Terbinafine Creams

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that is not serious or life-threatening. It is caused by the tinea fungus that produces burning, cracking, itching and peeling between your toes. Clotrimazole is the generic name for the brands Lotrimin and Mycelex. This cream acts as an anti-fungal medication to prevent the further growth of fungal cells. Similar to clotrimazole is terbinafine. Terbinafine is the generic name for Lamisil and also works to retard the growth of fungal cells. When clotrimazole and terbinafine were compared in a study published in the "British Journal of Dermatology" in 2006, it was shown that terbinafine was more effective in treating the tinea fungus.

Desonide Cream

Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by patchy scaling, itching, flaking and dandruff, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is most prominent on the scalp but can also be found on other parts of the body. When this skin disorder is found elsewhere than the scalp, creams can be used to correct the symptoms and improve your epidermis. Initial treatment is the application of over-the-counter antifungal creams. Symptoms that still remain following the use of OTC creams involve a combination of ketoconazole and desonide. Ketoconazole is taken orally and desonide is applied to the epidermis that shows symptoms.
