How to Take Zegerid

Zegerid is a prescription medication that is commonly used to treat a variety of disorders of the gastrointestinal system, primarily involving acid production. Zegerid is a combination of omeprazole (which inhibits stomach acid production) as well as sodium bicarbonate (which neutralizes stomach acid). Zegerid is available both in capsule form and as a powder.

Step 1

Take the medication on a empty stomach. For people receiving nutrition through a nasogastric tube, the feeding should be stopped for three hours prior to giving the medication.

Step 2

Take the medication at least one hour before a meal.

Step 3

Swallow Zegerid only with water. This means that if you are taking capsules, use water to swallow the pills. If you are using Zegerid powder, mix one packet with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water.

Step 4

Take the medication one time per day. The recommended dose is 20 milligrams per day, unless you are suffering from gastric ulcers, in which case your doctor will most likely prescribe 40 milligrams per day.

Step 5

Use only the size of capsule that you have been prescribed. This means that if you have a prescription for 40 milligrams per day, do not attempt to take two 20 milligram doses, as this could lead to an excess of sodium bicarbonate, which will lead to an increased salt intake that can raise blood pressure.
