Chances are you've had a bout or two with acid reflux. Simply put, acid reflux is the backward flow of stomach acids into the esophagus. Thought to be fairly harmless, acid reflux can lead to burning sensation in the chest (heartburn) and a bad taste in your mouth. There are a variety of over-the-counter remedies that can be used to treat the symptoms associated with acid reflux.
Antacids
Antacids are one of the most common forms of over-the-counter acid reflux medications. Brands include Tums, Maalox, Rolaids and Mylanta. They work by neutralizing the stomach acid and provide relief from the symptoms in mild cases of acid reflux. Antacids come in many forms: pills, water solubles and liquids. An antacid generally lasts only as long as it remains in the system. Be aware of how often you take over-the-counter antacids. Overuse can cause constipation and diarrhea.
Oral Suspension Medications
Oral suspension medications are another common over-the-counter remedy for mild cases of acid reflux. Brands like Pepto Bismol and Carafate are used to coat the inside of the esophagus. The main problem with oral suspension alternatives is that they tend to wear off quickly, and once the coating on the esophagus comes off, symptoms of acid reflux may start back up. Oral suspension medication is also associated with nausea, diarrhea, and in some cases, ulcers in the throat, stomach and intestines.
Anti-Gas Medications
It isn't uncommon for someone suffering from acid reflux to experience pressure and bloating along with heartburn. Anti-gas medications may be your best bet when this happens. Phazyme, Gas-X and Beano are some of the more popular over-the-counter anti-gas remedies. Essentially, anti-gas medications relieve pressure, gas and bloating of the digestive tract.
H-2 Receptor Blockers
Receptor blockers shut down acid production in the stomach. Until recently H-2 receptor blockers like Pepcid AC and Zantac could be obtained only with a prescription but are now available over-the-counter. Once again, H-2 receptor blockers are effective at treating only mild cases of acid reflux. They generally work at relieving the symptoms of acid reflux for a longer period of time but they also take longer to take effect.
Proton Pump Inhibitors
Like H-2 receptor blockers, proton pump inhibitors are now available over the counter for the treatment of mild cases of acid reflux. Proton pump inhibitors block acid production in the stomach and help to heal any damage that has occurred in the esophagus. These medications are generally administered under the watchful eye of a doctor but certain brands, like Prilosec, can be purchased over the counter.
