The prostate is a gland that plays in important role in the male reproductive system. Medical conditions that can affect the prostate include prostatitis, inflamed prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia, impotence and prostate cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in America, affecting more than 200,000 men in 2006. A healthy dietary lifestyle inclusive of certain foods might promote prostate health.
Flaxseed
Flaxseed is a nutrient-rich seed that provides omega-3 fatty acids---healthy fats the body requires and must obtain from foods---and dietary fiber. Fiber in flaxseed supports digestive health, and omega-3 fats might reduce bodily inflammation associated with prostate-related and other health conditions. Flaxseed also might reduce the severity of prostate cancer. Research conducted and published by Duke University in November 2002 showed a positive correlation between flaxseed consumption and reduced tumor aggressiveness and severity in mice engineered to acquire prostate cancer. Flaxseed is available in whole seed, ground, oil and dietary supplement form. Ground flaxseed might provide most benefits as it is easily digestible.
Zinc-Rich Foods
Zinc is a mineral your body needs in trace amounts. It supports normal growth and development, immune system function, DNA synthesis and wound healing. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, zinc might play an important role in reducing the effects of enlarged prostate. Valuable sources of zinc include oysters, beef, chicken, pork, lobster, baked beans, cashews, yogurt and chickpeas.
Quercetin-Rich Foods
Quercetin is an antioxidant derived from plant-based foods that is associated with reduced risk for disease. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, quercetin might help alleviate pain and inflammation associated with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis. Valuable amounts of quercetin can be reaped from onions, apples, various teas and red wine. Bromelain, an enzyme present in pineapple, and papain, an enzyme in papaya, might improve the effects of quercetin and further reduce inflammation.
Cartenoid-Rich Foods
Cartenoids are plant-based nutrients that provide potent antioxidant (disease-fighting) effects. According to the American Dietetic Association, cartenoids might help protect the body from prostate cancer. Valuable sources of cartenoids include carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and other dark green, yellow, orange and red fruits and vegetables.
