The Village of Egg Harbor is situated within the Town of Egg Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin. With a combined population of under 1,500, Egg Harbor offers outdoor and sports enthusiasts plenty of activities and attractions, as well as more than half a dozen area campgrounds, running the gamut from those offering primitive or back-country sites to those with resort-like amenities and services. Egg Harbor was named by "Budget Travel" as one of the top 10 "coolest small towns in America."

Public Campgrounds

Most area state and regional parks offer spring, summer and fall parking. State parks tend to charge lower nightly rates than their private counterparts, but also tend to offer fewer amenities and services. Public campgrounds offer mostly non-hookup sites, but all have restroom and shower facilities.

Peninsula State Park offers 468 camp sites, including group campsites, an 18-hole golf course, a sandy beach, bike trails and eight miles of shoreline. Potawatomi State Park's Daisyfield Campground has 123 sites, 40 of which have full hookups. At Newport State Park, there are 38.3 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as 16 backpack sites, 13 of which can be reserved. Winter backpack camping is available.

Private Campgrounds

As a general rule of thumb, private campgrounds tend to offer more services and amenities than their public counterparts, making them a better choice for families with young children. Door County Camping Retreat offers amenities, such as complimentary Wi-Fi, cabins, RV and tent sites, easy access to all five Door County State Parks, as well as a playground, camp store, pool and game room. Egg Harbor Campground and RV Resort has 160 tent and RV sites, as well as three log cabins, a heated pool, Wi-Fi, a video game room, laundry, playground, camp store and apple orchard. At the Harbor Village Campground and Water Park, guests will find Door County's largest water park, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi, a sandy beach, a playground, sports fields and courts.

All private campgrounds have public restroom and shower facilities.

Camping Considerations

As a result of Egg Harbor's popularity, campgrounds tend to fill up quickly. Public campground reservations can be made 48 hours to a year in advance. Private campground reservations should also be made at least a few months in advance. Remember that heavy snowfall can make winter driving hazardous, particularly for those driving a large RV or pulling an over-sized trailer. Also, although some campgrounds stay open year-round, most are only open from May 1 through October 1, so be sure to call ahead to time and confirm that your campground of choice is open if you plan to do late fall or winter camping.

If you plan to do a lot of hiking and swimming in late spring, early fall or anytime during the summer, be sure to pack the bug repellent and sunscreen, and wear appropriate hiking gear in order to reduce the risk of Lyme Disease, Poison Ivy and Poison Oak.

Attractions and Activities

Egg Harbor offers campers young and old plenty of activities and attractions. Kids will enjoy taking a Door County Fireboat Cruise, riding the Door County Trolley, visiting Egg Harbor Fun Park and the Plum Loco Animal Farm. The entire family can take a segway tour of Door County or a Grizzly Scenic Air Tour. Kayak, canoe, swim, boat or sail on Green Bay or Lake Michigan, or head to Alpine Golf Course, Horseshoe Bay Gulf Club, The Orchards Golf Course or Stonehedge Golf course to polish your game.

If you'd rather focus on your mental, spiritual and physical well-being, head to the Lavender Spa for a bit of rejuvenation. Go for an evening stroll at Frank E. Murphy Park in Horseshoe Bay or spend the day swimming and sunbathing at Peach Park. Nature lovers will want to check out the Nature Park, and hikers can head to Peninsula State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Newport State Park, Potawatomi State Park or J.W. Wells State Park.

In winter, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating.

Dining

Health conscious campers will be glad to know that low-calorie, low-fat dining options are plentiful in and around Egg Harbor. For organic coffee and baked goods, head to The Bridge Organic Coffee House. Vegetarians can enjoy raw vegetables, vegetarian dishes, and a juice bar at Greens-N-Grains Deli. Those who would rather dine in can head to a local farmers market from early summer to late fall for regionally-grown and produced produce and dairy products. Most chain and non-chain restaurants in the area offer at least a few relatively healthy options, such as grilled chicken, freshly caught fish or salads.
