Ping pong is a recreational sport played by many people in their basements, college dorms and rec halls. One of the ways to improve is to learn how to put spin on the ball, which starts with the serve and continues on the forehand and backhand shots. The most common type of spin is top spin, which is used when players go on the attack. A slice backhand with under spin is also an effective shot.
Step 1
Toss the ball into the air to begin your serve. Strike the ball with a downward angle so that underspin is created and the ball bounds over the net and lands on your opponent's side of the table. When you strike the ball with an aggressive downward swing, the ball will stay low and make it difficult to return.
Step 2
Put top spin on the ball to hit an aggressive forehand winner. Angle the paddle at about 45 degrees and then hit the top part of the ball. Follow through on your shot to create the most spin and a sharp downward break. If you hit the ball with the flat side of the paddle, it may not hit the table.
Step 3
Hit the underside of the ball with your backhand when you are trying to hit the ball deep to your opponent. By taking a downward slashing stroke, the ball will stay low and hit deep on the table. You are attacking the ball with the same 45-degree angle that you did on the forehand shot, but this time you are hitting the bottom part of the ball.
Step 4
Toss the ball straight up in the air and hit it with the forehand surface of your paddle as you strike the right side of the ball with a forward stroke in order to make the ball curve from right to left. This is regularly done by a right-handed player when serving. This side spin will force your opponent to move quickly in order to retrieve the shot. If he can get his paddle on it, it may be a weak shot and that will give you an opportunity to hit a winner.
