Melanin provides two types of pigment for your hair---eumelanin, which is dark, and phaeomelanin, which is light. These two pigments blend together to create various hair colors. However, as you get older, the production of melanin slows down and your hair begins to turn gray. Other factors also contribute to gray hair such as genetics, hormones and toxins. In some cases, graying may be a gradual process or it can happen quickly. To prevent yellowing and keep your gray hair beautiful, keep these tips in mind.
Step 1
Keep your hair clean. According to Pamela Ferrell, author of "Let's Talk Hair," pollutants, perspiration and daily styling products build up on hair and cause yellowing. Wash hair no less than once a week to keep it vibrant and healthy.
Step 2
Use colorless hair products. Shampoos, conditioners, oils, gels and other products stain gray hair and give it a yellowish, dingy hue.
Step 3
Rinse your hair thoroughly after shampooing and conditioning to remove any residue that can be left on your hair from these products.
Step 4
Use heat-styling implements sparingly. These appliances may burn or scorch your hair and turn it yellow or brown, explains Ferrell. They also make your hair more brittle. Use curling irons, flat irons or other hair appliances on low or medium heat if you must use them.
Step 5
Do not use products that contain phenylenediamine, states Ferrell. This ingredient is common in dark hair dyes or color treatments.
Step 6
Use an herb such as betony or hollyhock to brighten gray hair.
Step 7
Wear a hat or cap if you're going to be outdoors for a long period of time as sunlight can discolor your hair.
Step 8
Attach a water filter to the tap or shower where you wash your hair if your water is chlorinated, advises New York-based hair and scalp specialist David H. Kingsley in an interview with "O, The Oprah Magazine."
Tips and Warnings
- Wear a cap when you go swimming to protect it from chlorine in the water. Thoroughly wash and rinse your hair afterward. Ferrell recommends using color to highlight gray hair rather than completely covering it. Your hair color will be warmer and less stark. It's also less damaging to gray hair.
- Do not use supplements that claim to restore gray hair to its original color or improve its appearance without speaking to your doctor first.
