The body mass index, or BMI, is a ratio of your height and weight that allows you to assess your weight. Dr. Steven B. Halls provides a recommended range for the BMI of each gender. You can use these values to derive equations for your weight range from your height and gender. A physician will be able to provide a more specific weight within this range based on a physical examination.
Calculation of Weight Range for Women
Step 1
Measure your height in inches with a tape measure. Assume your height is 67 inches.
Step 2
Convert BMI values from metric units of measure to English units. Dr. Stephen B. Halls provides a range of 19.1 to 25.8 kg/m^2 as the normal BMI range for women. Divide these values by 703 to obtain a normal BMI range of 0.0272 to 0.0367 lb/in^2 for women.
Step 3
Derive the equations that will provide your weight range based on your height. Your BMI is given by the formula BMI = [Weight / (Height x Height)]. Solve this equation for Weight to get the formula Weight = (Height x Height) x BMI. Substitute the BMI values from step two into this equation to get a recommended weight range of [(Height x Height) x 0.0272] pounds to [(Height x Height) x 0.0367] pounds.
Step 4
Calculate your weight range using your height and the formulas in Step 3. Your minimum weight is [(Height x Height) x 0.0272] pounds, and your height is 67 inches. Your minimum weight is therefore [67 x 67) x 0.0272] = 122 lb. Your maximum weight is [(Height x Height) x 0.0367] pounds, and your height is 67 inches. Your maximum weight is therefore [(67 x 67) x 0.0367] = 165 lb.
Calculation of Weight Range for Men
Step 1
Measure your height in inches with a tape measure. Assume your height is 71 inches.
Step 2
Convert BMI values from metric units of measure to English units. Dr. Stephen B. Halls provides a range of 20.7 to 26.4 kg/m^2 as the normal BMI range for men. Divide these values by 703 to obtain a normal BMI range of 0.0294 to 0.0376 lb/in^2 for men.
Step 3
Derive the equations that will provide your weight range based on your height. Your BMI is given by the formula BMI = [Weight / (Height x Height)]. Solve this equation for Weight to get the formula Weight = (Height x Height) x BMI. Substitute the BMI values from Step 2 into this equation to get a recommended weight range of [(Height x Height) x 0.0294] pounds to [(Height x Height) x 0.0376] pounds.
Step 4
Calculate your weight range using your height and the formulas in step three. Your minimum weight is [(Height x Height) x 0.0294] pounds, and your height is 71 inches. Your minimum weight is therefore [71 x 71) x 0.0294] = 148 lb. Your maximum weight is [(Height x Height) x 0.0376] pounds, and your height is 71 inches. Your maximum weight is therefore [(71 x 71) x 0.0376] = 190 lb.
