Listerine is a brand of mouthwash, but its original use was as an antiseptic to fight infection in surgery, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary. Listerine later advertised the product in "Cosmopolitan" magazine as a treatment for dandruff. Some practitioners of home remedies still tout Listerine's use as a treatment for flaky scalps.
Step 1
Check your scalp for broken skin. Listerine contains alcohol and other potentially irritating ingredients that may cause pain and inflammation if applied to open wounds.
Step 2
Shampoo your hair as usual and rinse clean. For extra dandruff-fighting power, use a shampoo containing zinc pyrithione.
Step 3
Apply a capful of Listerine to your head, being careful not to drip any into your eyes. Try to coat your scalp rather than your hair. You may also mix Listerine with a few tablespoons of baby oil to help the Listerine stick to your skin.
Step 4
Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes then rinse clean. Repeat every day for a week or as necessary.
Tips and Warnings
- Disinfect combs and brushes by soaking them in Listerine. Use only the original formula of Listerine. The special formula variations contain fluoride and chemicals, which may dry or damage your hair.
- The alcohol in Listerine can be drying, so don't use this treatment more than once a day.
