A UTI is more commonly known by its full name of a urinary tract infection. Mayoclinic.com defines a UTI as an infection that can be seen in any part of the urinary system. According to New York Times Health Guide, the treatments for a UTI depend on whether the patient has a mild or a simple bladder/kidney infection or whether the infection is more serious. If the patient has a mild or simple bladder or kidney infection, the treatments for UTI will be the use of orally administered antibiotics for 3-14 days.

Amoxilin

According to MayoClinic.com, one of the treatments for a UTI is amoxilin. Amoxilin is also known as amoxicillin. Its American brand names are augmentin and amoclan. Amoxilin is mainly used to combat bacterial infections. It is an antibiotic that belongs to a group of medicines known as penicillins. For treating a simple UTI infection, amoxilin is administered via oral tablets.

Ciprofloxacin

MayoClinic.com lists down Ciprofloxacin as one of the treatments for a UTI. Its orally administered extended release tablets are used only for treating simple UTIs. Ciprofloxacin is a prescription drug that belongs to a group of medicines known as fluoroqinolone antibiotics.

Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim

According to MayoClinic.com, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim is a prescription treatment for a UTI. It is commonly known as sulfamethotrime. It is a combination of the two antibiotics sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is administered orally in the form of tablets.
According to "The New York Times," if there is a recurring UTI and its source happens to be an anatomical cause, surgery will be required and then thereafter an antibiotic treatment for some months. According to MayoClinic.com, in addition to the antibiotics, doctors may also prescribe analgesics, pain killers, which will help to ease the patient's pain when they are urinating.
