Most everyone experiences heartburn from time to time. Heartburn is a burning feel that moves from the lower chest up the throat, according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. A heartburn episode may feel as though food is coming back up. Heartburn typically develops after eating and may cause a bitter or sour taste in the throat. Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, neutralizes stomach acid and can ease the symptoms of heartburn, notes Drugs.com. Baking soda remedies for heartburn include mixing it with water, juice or vinegar or simply taking it in tablet form.

Add Baking Soda to Water

Dissolving 1/2 tsp. of baking soda in 4 oz. of water can relieve heartburn, according to the Arm & Hammer website. This standard dosage for adults and teenagers can be repeated every two hours. The maximum recommended dosage in a 24-hour period is seven doses of 1/2 tsp. or three doses of 1/2 tsp. in individuals over age 60. Do not take the maximum dose for longer than two weeks, notes Arm & Hammer. Symptoms of baking soda overdose can include feeling full, vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination and irritability.

Mix Baking Soda With Vegetable Juice

Mixing baking soda with vegetable juice to relieve heartburn can add nutrients and help improve the taste. Celery, cucumber or carrot juice are all good choices, according to HeartburnHomeRemedies.net. Avoid using citrus drinks like orange and tomato juice since they have the potential to encourage heartburn.

Dissolve Baking Soda in Apple Cider Vinegar

To make a fizzy heartburn antacid, mix baking soda with apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar fights bacteria and can help ease the symptoms of heartburn, according to the website Disabled World. Apple cider vinegar contains copper, iron, calcium and other trace elements. Combine 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar, about 1/2 tsp. of baking and a dash of sugar in 6 oz. of water. Drink the solution about one hour after eating.

Take Baking Soda Tablets

If you don't like the idea of drinking baking soda, regardless of what it may be mixed with, baking soda tablets are available to ease heartburn or sour stomach, according to Drugs.com. The suggested dosage for adults and teenagers is 325mg to 2g up to four times daily.
