When the skin on your hands becomes dry and cracked, it is quite painful and can disrupt your daily activities. There are different causes for dry skin on your hands, including cold weather, skin conditions such as eczema, and the use of harsh soaps or chemicals on your hands. Home remedies for dry hands are generally inexpensive. Consult your physician before trying any home remedy on dry hands.
Olive Oil
Olive oil on your hands will act as a healthy moisturizer, without any harsh chemicals or additives that may dry your skin. Before you go to bed at night, make an olive oil and sugar mixture to soothe your dry hands. Mix 2 tbsp. of regular white sugar with 2 tbsp. of olive oil. Rub it into your hands, and once the sugar begins to dissolve, wash your hands with warm water. This will leave your hands smooth but not oily.
Petroleum Jelly
Many people have petroleum jelly already in their medicine cabinet, and it can help relieve dry, cracked hands. Petroleum jelly will add moisture to your skin, while providing a barrier to keep air out and avoid further cracking.
Humidifier
Climate often is responsible for dry hands, especially during the winter. If you live in a dry area, purchase a humidifier to use in your home. The humidifier will increase the moisture level in the air, which can help give your hands a break. Place the humidifier in the room where you spend the most time, and follow the unit's cleaning instructions to avoid mold buildup inside the humidifier.
Soaps and Lotions
One of the best ways to treat dry hands is to avoid engaging in activities that make the condition worse. If your hands are dried out, stop using soaps with artificial fragrance and other chemicals. Don't wash your hands in hot water, instead opt for cool or lukewarm water. Also, avoid any hand creams or lotions that contain chemicals or artificial fragrance. Soaps that might help your dry skin include goat's milk, cocoa butter or chamomile in the ingredients. Look for lotions that contain ingredients such as aloe and vitamin E to help soothe your hands.
