With so much to see and do and a temperate climate throughout the year, it is no wonder that San Francisco is at or near the top of the Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards year after year. February may bring the city's notorious fog and some cold nights and rain, but outdoor activities and healthy living do not take a winter break in the city by the Bay.

Healthy Eating

The San Francisco area has a well-earned reputation for being a national leader in healthy eating. The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is open on Saturdays throughout February. Try a meal made with fresh, local ingredients at one of the city's restaurants, such as Woodward's Garden in the Mission District or Magnolia Pub, which pours artisan ales brewed on-site. Both restaurants serve grass-fed and pasture-raised meat from Marin Sun Farms, an area farm committed to holistic ranching, sustainable agriculture and biological diversity.

Healing Waters

Japanese culture strongly believes in the healing powers of water and therapeutic touch, so it is fitting that in a city with a strong Asian heritage there is a destination where you can soak in a Japanese-style communal bath. Kabuki Springs and Spa is an urban oasis in the heart of Japantown. Take a plunge in the hot pool or enjoy the cold plunge, dry sauna, and steam room plus a full array of body treatments, massage and acupuncture services.

Enjoy the Bay

The waters of the San Francisco Bay are never particularly warm, so go ahead and take a February dip. Swim in the open waters of Aquatic Park, where a line of buoys mark off a quarter-mile course. For something slightly less refreshing, take out a kayak and paddle through the Bay.

The Sausalito Ferry

Ride the ferry across the Bay and spend a day in Sausalito. Photographers and artists will enjoy stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline from across the water. Sausalito's marina is home to numerous cruises, boats and yachts; explore the area under your own steam in a rented sailboat or kayak. Or test your balance by touring the waterfront on an eco-friendly Segway, which follows the area's bike trails.

Urban Walking

The steep streets of San Francisco are prime stomping grounds for invigorating urban walks. A hike up Telegraph Hill to the landmark Coit Tower will reward you with amazing views of the city; keep up your strength while you climb uphill by remembering that the way back is downhill. For adventures on flat land, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a favorite with residents and out-of-towners alike. The bridge is 1.7 miles long and can be very windy, so bundle up. Roller blades, skates and skateboards are not allowed, but feel free to bring your bicycle if you prefer.
