Our skin is the largest organ in the human body. It protects our internal organs, but the skin needs protection itself from damaging environmental elements. Proper skin care is the key to maintaining healthy skin that looks and feels great. Everyone has a different complexion, skin sensitivity and daily habits. To find the perfect skin care, you'll need to figure out how to balance these factors.

Step 1

Find out if your skin is normal, dry, oily or combination. Try the "mirror test" or the "napkin blot test". Press your face against a mirror. If you leave a smudge on the mirror, you have oily skin. If the smudge is left where your forehead, nose and chin touch the mirror, only your T-zone is oily. Also, take a quiz to determine your skin type.

Step 2

Make a note of your complexion: light or fair, medium or tan to dark.

Step 3

Consider your daily habits. Drink adequate amounts of water to hydrate your skin from the inside out. Do not smoke, as it has negative effects on your skin. Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption; both dehydrate the body.

Step 4

Do not "over-wash" your skin. Wash your face twice a day at most. Use lukewarm water or hot water. Exfoliate the skin two to three times a week. Avoid harsh scrubs.

Step 5

Use a daily moisturizer with sunscreen regardless of your skin type to prevent sun damage, age spots and cancer. Apply the moisturizer while skin is still damp to seal in moisture.

Step 6

Read labels. Choose products which are non-comedogenic since they won't cause acne or clog pores. Use products that contain antioxidants to slow free-radical damage. Avoid products with "acids" listed as active ingredients if you have sensitive skin. Do not use cleansers or toners with alcohol because they can irritate or dry the skin.
