Two of the main deterrences for the normal dieter are cost and convenience. Low calorie dieters with hectic schedules may find themselves reaching for costly pre-packaged food because the tasty alternatives may take hours to prepare, or may not store well at all. Fortunately, there are many different types of low-cost, low-calorie meals to choose from that are not only easy to make, but are appetizing as well.

Types

While planning your low-calorie meals, it is easiest to divide them up into different types so you can repeat main ingredients, which allows you to buy in bulk and save money, while mixing up the sauces, dressings and extras. It is easiest to divide your choices into categories like dinners, soups, sandwiches, breakfast and snacks. Dinners would be defined as casseroles or a full dish that takes some preparation.

Dinners

For full dishes, try to gravitate toward the recipes with the least number of ingredients. Not only will this cut down your cost and prep time, often this cuts down the total calories in the dish as well. Learn which dishes freeze well, and do not be afraid to substitute to make these dishes lower in calories. A common substitute for butter is to use half the recommended amount in applesauce and the other half in water. This often gives a very close consistency, and often adds a bit of sweetness to the dish.

Soups and Sandwiches

Homemade soups may be the better option for the low-calorie dieter, because you are able to control ingredients like salt and fat. Buy bullion or stock in your choice of flavor and add your ingredients, simmer for a few hours, portion off and freeze for later use. Sandwiches are also a great convenience, because they can also be pre-made and frozen or put together in a short amount of time. Find a brand or type of low-calorie bread you like for sandwiches and stick to it. Avoid oils and oil-based dressings, but if you need a particular flavor, sprays may be available that will allow you maximum taste for minimum calories.

Snacks

Snacks are important for low-calorie dieters. Not only do they keep your blood sugar up, they keep your stomach full and keep you from falling into the deprivation mindset. These are also the cheapest and easiest portion of the diet, and require little to no preparation. Fruit and vegetables are the easiest snacks, but be wary of high-calorie or high-fat dips. Salads can also be a staple. Often a little salt or spice is all you need to enhance the flavor of these snacks. Small bags of nuts, or individual low-fat string cheese, can be good as well if you are craving protein.

Warning

Before starting a low-calorie, or any other type of diet, consult your personal physician. Always take into consideration your body's needs and minimum calorie and nutrient intake while dieting.
