Eyelashes may be thought of as simply a physical attribute, with long eyelashes being something to covet. In reality, eyelashes perform the role of protecting the eyes from debris. People who lose their eyelashes or do not have long enough lashes suffer from hypotrichosis, a medical condition which can be reversed in some people. There are several ways in which you can make your eyelashes longer without having to use mascara as a lengthening method.
Step 1
Use water or a non-foaming cleanser to remove eye makeup. A gentle soap for sensitive skin is easier on the eye area that foaming cleansers or abrasive scrubs. Abrasive cleaners raise risk of damage to the eyelashes, which may break or shorten them.
Step 2
Reduce the amount of eyeshadow and eyeliner you use, or forgo it completely if you are having a problem keeping your eyelashes long and healthy. Eye makeup can be irritating and may cause your eyelashes to lose some of their hair growth. If you do continue to wear eye makeup, opt for more "natural" or mineral formulas that may be gentler.
Step 3
Discuss with your doctor the possibility of using a prescription drug to lengthen your eyelashes. According to a November 2007 article in the "Wall Street Journal," medications containing bimatoprost can promote a thicker and longer eyelash growth in some people (see Resources). Bimatoprost is developed from an ingredient in medications used to treat glaucoma and is marketed under the names Lumigan and Latisse in the United States.
