Because of the numerous synthetics included in regular deodorants, there are many natural or organic alternatives to choose from in today's market. Dan Shapley from The Daily Green claims to avoid deodorants that contain aluminum compounds, parabens, antibacterials like triclosan, synthetic fragrances or petrochemicals like propylene glycol. Note that the Food and Drug Administration has not condoned any commercial deodorants and has stated there is no reason for concern.
Weleda Wild Rose
"Cookie" magazine rates the Weleda Wild Rose as among one of its favorites for natural deodorants. It contains pure essential oils, including rose and rosehip leaf extract, which are said to be antibacterial. Alexandra Zissu, of the Daily Green, also lists it among her favorites, and claims that it avoids all chemicals found in the commercial choices.
Dr. Hauschka
Dr. Hauschka offers a variety of skin care solutions and has a reputation for being top of the line in organic and natural products. Dr. Hauschka offers two choices: Deodorant Floral and Deodorant Fresh. This deodorant was at the top of Zissu's list. Dr. Hauschka's website claims that both deodorants contain zinc ricinoleate, which helps to reduce odor without disturbing the skin. Deodorant Floral contains the extracts of neem and sage, whereas Deodorant Fresh contains witch hazel and sage extracts.
Earth Science
Earth Science Natural Deodorant is another favorite of "Cookie" magazine. Its main natural ingredient is lichen plant extract, and it avoids chemicals such as aluminum. One tester from the magazine said, "I'm relieved to not worry about clogging my pores with metals or any other toxins. It's probably about 90 percent as effective as what I was using before, but it is worth it."
Erbaviva
Zissu also lists Erbaviva in her top nine list. Erbaviva's Lemon Sage Deodorant is a U.S. Department of Agriculture organic spray with minimal ingredients, containing the extracts of sage, lemon, patchouli and tea tree oils in organic grain alcohol. Another option is Erbaviva's Jasmine Grapefruit Deodorant, which has organic extracts of jasmine, grapefruit and sage oils in organic grain alcohol.
Bumble and Bee
Bumble and Bee's Lemongrass and Rosemary Deodorant Spray contains three ingredients: organic lemongrass and organic rosemary essential oils in pure grain spirits. Zissu says that "a short ingredient list of easy-to-read, easy-to-pronounce and easy-to-understand words is always a very good sign when it comes to searching for pure cosmetics."
