Frizzy hair can detract from an otherwise polished and professional look. Unfortunately, the climate, indoor heating and cooling, heat and chemical damage, as well as genetics can make your hair look rough and unkempt. Luckily, a few lifestyle changes can help you handle your frizzy hair and transform your tresses to something smoother and more manageable. You may find that some of the styling techniques that you currently employ could be exacerbating the problem and making your frizzy hair worse.

Step 1

Visit your hairstylist for regular trims. Hair always splits from the bottom up, which could leave you with frizzy-looking hair. By cutting away the damaged portion of the hair, you'll get smoother locks and healthier hair. Ignoring your split ends could result in the damage of the hair shaft to the very roots.

Step 2

Wash your hair with a hydrating shampoo. Hydrating shampoos and conditioners deposit silicon into your hair so your hair has more weight and texture. If you wash your hair every day, ensure that you're using a shampoo made especially for dry hair or everyday washing, like a baby shampoo or a formula that is sulfate-free. Excess washing can dry out your hair and make it more susceptible to frizz. Apply a leave-in conditioner containing silicone after washing to give your hair more weight and moisture.

Step 3

Pat your hair dry when you get out of the shower. Rubbing and scrubbing your hair to get rid of excess moisture roughs up the hair cuticle, resulting in frizz. Instead, pat your hair dry and immediately comb in a heat protecting spray if you plan to use heated styling tools. The spray creates a barrier between your tools and the hair shaft to help ward off damage.

Step 4

Give your hair a break and use the heated styling tools less if you can. Heated styling tools can burn and singe your hair, leaving it excessively dry and prone to damage. Instead of relying on your hair dryer and flat iron, comb a serum-based product through your hair and allow to air dry for definition and wave. Avoid mousse and hairspray if possible, as they are alcohol-based and can dry out hair.

Step 5

Dry your hair by using a hair dryer set on a warm setting. Use a diffuser or directional nozzle, and point the hair dryer down the hair shaft. This keeps the shaft smooth and frizz-free. Try to do as much of the styling work as possible with the hair dryer, as a flat iron is damaging to your dry, frizzy hair and should be used as little as possible.

Step 6

Rub a small amount of lip balm on your fingers if you are experiencing a frizz emergency. If you're caught at work without hair products and notice that your hair is frizzing, a heavy, wax-based product like lip balm can be a quick-fix way to handle frizzy hair. Just run your balm-coated fingers over the top of your hair to tame flyaways and frizz.
