How to Attach Bicycle Pumps

Different methods are required to attach a pump to a bicycle tire valve, depending on the type of pump and the valves your bicycle uses. Schrader valves are more widely used and familiar to most cyclists. They are wider, with a spring-loaded valve inside to control airflow. Presta valves are much narrower and are usually used on tires that require a thin wheel rim. This valve uses a lock nut that you must first open and depress before inflating the tire. With an understanding of the valve type and the pump required, you can attach your pump properly.

Step 1

Determine whether your bicycle inner tube has a Schrader or a Presta valve. Unscrew and remove the valve cover.

Step 2

Unscrew the valve lock nut and briefly press it down, if your bike has a Presta valve. If your pump head does not have a hole that accommodates a Presta valve, thread on a Presta valve adapter to the valve. This will allow it to accept a pump that only fits a Schrader valve.

Step 3

Install the proper attachment onto the pump head for the valve type on your bicycle, if necessary.

Step 4

Open the locking lever on the pump head. Place the appropriate hole in the pump head over the tip of the valve and press down until the pump head stops. Close the locking lever of the pump head to ensure a proper seal. You are now ready to inflate the tire.

Tips and Warnings

  • Slow and even pumping works best to inflate the tire properly. Excessively vigorous pumping can damage the tube or tire.

Things You'll Need
