Severe water retention, known as edema, can result in swelling of your limbs, shortness of breath and an altered mental state. Less severe water retention can cause bloating or puffiness, but it may be the number on the scale that concerns you most. Whether you want to get relief from the bloating caused by your menstrual cycle, need to make weight for the wrestling match or just want to see a lower number on the scale you can get rid of excess water weight.

Step 1

Reduce your salt intake because salt causes your cells to hold water. The Mayo Clinic recommends eliminating canned soups, deli meats and pre-packaged sauces, especially soy sauce, in addition to not adding salt to your foods.

Step 2

Drink more water. Although it may not sound logical, drinking more water will actually help your body to let go of the water it is storing in your cells. Registered dietitian Betty Greer, Ph.D., of the University of Tennessee, recommends women consume nine cups of water daily, and men consume 12. More water is required if you are dehydrated, exercising or ill.

Step 3

Use a diuretic to remove salt and retained fluid. Ask a physician to prescribe a diuretic if you have severe water retention.
