An individual who desires to get a nursing degree as an undergraduate must know what the best nursing schools in the country are. U.S. News and World Report released a ranking of the top 10 nursing schools in the country; various other websites and publications published their own list. Together, they make up a list of universities that will prepare a student well for a career in nursing.

University of Pennsylvania

According to Education Portal, the University of Pennsylvania was ranked as the fourth best university in the United States by U.S. News and World Report in 2010. The publication also said that UPenn has the third best nursing school in the country.

University of Washington

The University of Washington campus has 39,675 students, according to Education Portal. The campus also was ranked as the top nursing school for undergraduates by U.S. News and World Report, according to My Nursing Degree.

University of California in Los Angeles

The Princeton Review ranked UCLA as one of the best western colleges in 2010 and also as one of the top value public universities. Students can get a bachelor of science in nursing, a master's degree in nursing or one of five doctoral degrees in nursing.

Johns Hopkins University

According to My Nursing Degree, John Hopkins University School of Nursing is one of the United States' oldest nursing programs. The program is also a recipient of funding for nursing research from the National Institutes of Health.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor is the oldest university in Michigan. Its nursing program is highly touted and has been called a "Public Ivy" school, according to My Nursing Degree. The school has 41,028 students on campus.

University of Illinois

According to My Nursing Degree, the University of Illinois - Chicago is the biggest university in the greater Chicago area. It has about 25,000 students that attend within 15 different schools. They also have the largest medical school in the country.

Oregon Health and Science University

The Oregon Health and Science University has a nursing program that combines dentistry, nursing and medicine into one single center on the campus.

University of Maryland - Baltimore

The University of Maryland-Baltimore was established in 1889, according to My Nursing Degree. Its ground-breaking educational programs are nationally renowned for their focus on urgent health issues in the United States and abroad.

Purdue University

Purdue University's nursing school offers numerous programs, according to the school's website, including a master of science as both a pediatric nurse and adult nurse practitioner, a second degree baccalaureate program, a doctor of nursing practice and a post master's adult nurse practitioner certificate, among other programs.

University of Pittsburgh

The school was founded in April 1939, but the University of Pittsburgh is still one of the top nursing schools in the country. Its rigorous curriculum prepares students to become efficient nurses through a combination of academics, clinical work, and research, according to My Nursing Degree.
