The emergence of itchy skin is often associated with allergies, infections or hereditary conditions. Dry skin, for example, often develops due to environmental factors such as the weather, bathing too often or long-term use of air conditioning or central heating leading to itchy skin, MayoClinic.com notes. Nerves in our skin cause the unyielding sense of itch as a response to several issues. Using certain products can help quell this undesired sensation. However, if itchy skin persists despite regular treatment, contact a physician immediately for the necessary testing and treatment.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal has a variety of anti-itch and calming compounds including silicon, avenanthramides and beta-glucan, reports the RN Guide to Skin Care website. Avenanthramides specifically help to block histamine, the compound responsible for itching, according to research reported in the May 2008 "Archives of Dermatological Research." Histamine is a protein that releases during an allergic reaction, which tells our nerves to transmit information to the brain inducing us to itch. For widespread itchiness, soak in a bath containing one to two cups of unflavored oatmeal. The moisturizing elements coat the skin and reduce itching and irritation associated with skin infections such as the chickenpox or psoriasis.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines are available in both topical and oral applications and work to reduce itchiness to prevent further aggravation to the skin. These products are helpful when allergies caused by environmental agents such as pollution, pollen or animal dander cause the itching sensation on the skin. In some cases, hives can appear, which are red itchy bumps that swell up on the skin during an allergic reaction, MedlinePlus notes. Over-the-counter oral antihistamines such as diphenhydramine or hydroxyzine reduce the release of chemicals that induce itching. Topical products that include phenol, menthol and camphor absorb into the skin to soothe itching and deliver antihistamine effects.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is helpful to those with sensitive skin since it contains calming properties, states the American Academy of Dermatology. Those with itchy skin usually exhibit an increased responsiveness to the environment. The itching and burning characteristic of sun damage, rashes and allergic reactions benefit from the inner fluid of the aloe vera plant, reports the Healthy Skin Care website. Additionally, the MayoClinic.com reports that aloe vera may help to reduce itchiness associated with dry skin, psoriasis, skin burns and ulcers, wounds and dermatitis.
