During pregnancy, fluctuations in hormones can cause hair growth in unexpected places, such as the nipples and belly. Depilatories can remove unwanted hair efficiently--and without pain. Depilatories come in a liquid or cream format. They are fast acting, easy to apply and can be purchased at almost any drug or grocery stores. They can be used almost anywhere that hair occurs, including sensitive areas like the face and bikini area.
Step 1
Choose a depilatory that is designed for the area you want to remove hair. For instance, a depilatory for the legs can be too strong for use on the face.
Step 2
Test a small patch of skin 24 hours before applying product all over. Since the skin is more sensitive during pregnancy, irritation and redness may develop easier.
Step 3
Be sure that the room is well-ventilated to prevent illness or dizziness.
Step 4
Apply the depilatory and wait approximately three minutes. Follow the directions on the package because times may vary.
Step 5
Remove the cream with a sponge or washcloth. Gently scrub the skin for approximately three minutes to remove both cream and hair.
Step 6
Rinse the chemical remover with warm water and then moisturize your skin with your favorite lotion.
Tips and Warnings
- According to the KidsHealth website, it is important to read and follow all package directions carefully. Because there is a chance depilatories may soak into the blood stream or cause chemical burns, do not leave them on for longer than necessary. If attempting to remove hair in the bikini area, be sure to check the label to make sure it is safe to use in that area. Coarse hair can be more difficult to remove with chemical removers. Consider an alternate hair removal method if depilatories are ineffective.
- The American Pregnancy Association warns that the active ingredients calcium thioglycolate and barium sulfide powder found in depilatories may be unsafe during pregnancy. Although there is no evidence to suggest these chemicals pose a danger, there are no studies that prove they are safe either. Since pregnancy heightens the sense of smell for many women, it is important to use depilatories with caution. The chemicals found in them create a strong odor when exposed to oxygen. Besides being unpleasant, this smell can trigger an allergic reaction in rare cases.
