Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Also called degenerative joint disease, the condition happens when the cartilage between the joints wears out. Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) is an osteoarthritis medication that is injected into the knee to relieve pain and replace the hyaluronate that occurs naturally in the body and helps to lubricate the joint.
Common Side Effects
Because Hyalgan is an injection, pain at the injection site is fairly common. Redness and swelling in the knee joint may also occur. Other common side effects that tend to go away over time include heat in the injection area, a rash and bruising.
Rare Side Effects
In certain instances, Hyalgan has been shown to cause more serious side effects. If you experience fever, rapid heartbeat, sweating, fainting, chest or stomach pressure/pain or redness in the hands and/or feet, contact your physician immediately.
Allergic Reaction
Hyalgan has been known to cause an allergic reaction in some people. An allergic reaction may include common symptoms like a rash and itching, but also some more serious side effects like trouble breathing and fainting. If you experience any allergy symptoms discontinue injections and tell your doctor. Hyalgan injections are essentially a formulation of rooster combs (the red things that you find on chickens). Those who have an adverse reaction to bird feathers or eggs should consult their doctors before being treated with Hyalgan.
