The flu arises when the body contracts the influenza virus, which infiltrates the respiratory system including the nose, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs, asserts MayoClinic.com. Unlike bacterial infections, the flu lacks a cure and is unresponsive to antibiotics, unless for treating secondary infections caused by immune suppression from the virus. In healthy adults and children, the flu usually needs to run its course and treatment focuses on the symptoms during the course of the illness. Consult a physician immediately if symptoms worsen or if the illness persists.

Steaming with Peppermint Essential Oil for Coughing and Congestion

Steam inhalations help to loosen congestion to eliminate accumulated mucous in the lungs and nose, asserts the Oxford Brookes University's Student Health and Wellbeing. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that peppermint, and its main ingredient menthol, are effective decongestants helpful in expelling amassed debris associated with the flu. Boil a pot of water with several drops of peppermint oil and inhale the steam with a towel draped around the head and pot. Alternately, you can do this in a hot bath, as peppermint oil is safe to use on the skin as well. Repeat this remedy two to three times a day until the flu subsides.

Warm Salt Water for Sore Throat

A sore throat often accompanies the flu, where a discomforting, pain or scratchiness gradually appears causing irritation, asserts MedlinePlus. Drinking warm liquids, for example, helps to soothe aggravation by alleviating soreness. However, one of the most effective ways to quell a sore throat is to gargle several times a day with warm salt water--a 1/2 tsp. of sea salt in 1 cup of water, MedlinePlus advocates. The salt helps to reduce inflammation, which happens in response to the flu.

Acetaminophen

Using over-the-counter products that include acetaminophen helps to reduce fever and relieve aches and pains often present during the flu, according to MedlinePlus. As the body attempts to fight off the virus, it naturally increases the body temperature indicative of the flu. If not properly controlled, a fever can cause brain damage if over 107 degrees F, warns MedlinePlus. Acetaminophen helps to regulate the fever so the body can effectively fight the flu without compromising its overall health.

Seek Medical Attention

Upon contraction of the flu and severe symptoms arise, seek the attention of a medical professional immediately. In some cases, if caught in the beginning stages within 12 to 48 hours, antivirals may benefit flu sufferers, the Flu Facts website states. However, antivirals may not be effective in fighting the circulating strains in the population, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Nonetheless, contacting a physician can help reduce symptoms affiliated with the influenza virus.
