Every hair on your head grows from a sebaceous gland, which provides oil that keeps your hair sleek and shiny, according to Teens Health. Sometimes the sebaceous glands become overactive and the excess sebum causes the hair to look oily. Although a hair mask applied twice weekly can restore your hair's shiny appearance, commercial hair masks can be prohibitively expensive. Solve the problem by treating your hair to a mask made from items in your kitchen.
Step 1
Place 1/3 cup apple cider in a small mixing bowl. Apple cider will help to remove a build-up of oil from your hair. Stir in 1 tsp. honey that has been warmed to room temperature.
Step 2
Whisk in 1/2 tsp. lavender essential oil and 1/2 tsp. mandarin orange essential oil. Squeeze in the juice of one fresh lemon and mix well.
Step 3
Wet your hair, and then pat it with a towel to remove excess water. Massage the mask into your hair. Start at your scalp and work the mixture to the ends of your hair. Allow the mask to remain in your hair for 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 4
Shampoo the mask from your hair, using a shampoo formulated for oily hair. Massage the shampoo into your scalp, and then allow the lather to remain in your hair for five minutes before rinsing with warm water, advises Health Services at Columbia University.
Step 5
Pat your hair dry with a soft towel, then comb your hair with a wide tooth comb. Avoid excessive combing or brushing, which will loosen oil from the scalp.
