Age spots usually pop up in people over the age of 40; however, if you have damaged your skin with too much time in the sun, they can appear much earlier. Age spots are dark spots on your skin that appear when the amount of melanin, or dark pigment, in your skin increases and the amount of collagen and elastin, the chemicals that keep your skin looking young, break down.
Step 1
Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Since direct exposure to the sun is the number one reason that age spots form, you must keep your age spots protected from UV rays. If you need to be outside, cover up your skin. Wear long pants, long sleeves, a hat, socks, shoes, and sunglasses. Put on sunscreen that contains an SPF of at least 30.
Step 2
Dip a cotton ball in lemon juice and apply it to your age spots. Let the juice dry on your skin. Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent that can, over time, diminish age spots.
Step 3
Dip a cotton ball in buttermilk and apply it to your age spots. Just like lemon juice, buttermilk has natural bleaching qualities that can fade your age spots.
Step 4
Exfoliate your skin to diminish age spots. By rubbing away the top layer of your skin, you can remove a lot of the melanin that makes your age spots dark. Next time you are in the shower, apply a mild soap to a firm loofah and rub it over the skin around your age spots. Use several times a week to keep up sloughing off the dead and dry skin that will build up.
