If you're ready to show off your new bikini, but your bikini area is plagued with swollen bumps, you may be suffering from ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs can appear after shaving, waxing or tweezing. When the hair is cut at an angle, it may pierce the skin and grow back underneath, creating a bump. To prevent ingrown hairs from growing under the skin, cut the hair evenly and the do not shave or trim your hair if your skin is irritated or swollen.

Step 1

Prepare the bikini area by rubbing it with a clean toothbrush in a circular motion for approximately one minute right before shaving, says MayoClinic.com. Rubbing the hair will help exfoliate the skin, soften the hair and encourage the hair to stand straight up.

Step 2

Slather on a moisturizing shaving gel to lubricate the bikini area and prevent skin irritation. Using a shaving gel will also help the hair stand straight so it can be shaved evenly.

Step 3

Use a new razor as often as possible, suggests Cosmopolitan magazine online in the article, "Bikini Bump No-No." Using an old razor may irritate the skin and spread bacteria, which may cause an infection.

Step 4

Shave with the grain so the hair is removed evenly and without irritation. After each stroke of the blade, rinse the razor to remove excess shaving gel. Shaving with a razor clogged with shaving gel may remove the hair unevenly.

Step 5

Wet a washcloth with cold water, then place it over the bikini line to prevent swelling, suggests MayoClinic.com. Calming down the skin will help hairs emerge straight out of the skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you don't have a toothbrush on hand, use a washcloth rinsed with warm water to stimulate the skin before shaving.
  • Consult a doctor if the skin on your bikini line is excessively painful or swollen.
