Serotonin is a chemical that gets released in the brain to regulate moods and reduce the chances of becoming depressed. When you have low levels of serotonin, you can sometimes be prescribed an antidepressant medication from your doctor. But these can come with unwanted side effects. To avoid this from happening, you need look no further than your diet. Although serotonin cannot be directly found in foods, there are several foods that can be consumed that help release it in the body.
Turkey
Thanksgiving always brings with it the same things such as family, football and turkey. Of the three, turkey can help release serotonin in the brain and cause you to become very relaxed. This might explain the post-meal nap that usually takes place minutes after you are done eating. The reason for this release of serotonin is because of an amino acid that helps convert it called "tryptophan." Duck and chicken are also meats that can help release serotonin.
Fish
There are some people who consider fish a meat and there are others who don't. Any way you look at it, it is a good source of protein and it can also help release serotonin due its tryptophan content.
Beans
Beans are legumes, meaning they have a seed that is covered by a pod. They are high in fiber and B vitamins, and they are also a source of tryptophan. Some specific varieties include black-eyed peas, chickpeas and lentils.
Eggs
Eggs are another type of protein that is also high in choline and proline, which are other amino acids. They can also help with the release of serotonin.
Dairy
Dairy products are known for their high amounts of calcium, which can help keep bones in good shape. But they can also help boost serotonin. Examples of these include milk, yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese.
Seeds and Nuts
Seeds and nuts are known for being high in essential fatty acids. They also have fiber and protein, and some varieties are high in tryptophan. Examples are sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and walnuts.
Folic Acid
Foods that are high in folic acid can also help promote serotonin release in the brain. Examples of foods that contain folic acid include leafy greens, broccoli, melons, oranges and asparagus.
