How Acupuncture Works for Infertility

Acupuncture

Acupuncture combined with certain herbal medications has been practiced for centuries as a way of treating certain types of infertility. Acupuncture involves the use of long needles inserted into specific points in the body. These meridians, or channels, can help regulate bodily function and improve certain conditions that affect fertility.

Acupuncture and Infertility

According to the American Fertility Association, acupuncture is thought of as a complementary treatment for fertility-related issues. Acupuncture has shown promise for improving ovular and follicular function. The American Pregnancy Association goes so far as to say that properly applied acupuncture can help increase blood flow to endometrium, making for a thicker, richer lining.

Treatment Basics

If you are planning on getting in vitro fertilization or getting a donor egg, the American Pregnancy Association suggests having acupuncture treatments for three or four months leading up to the insemination. Acupuncture can also be performed after insemination. Since miscarriages are more likely to happen in the first 12 weeks of conception, acupuncture should continue until after this time with a slight variation in needle placement post insemination.
