What Does Acidophilus Do to Digestion?

There are things living inside you. Tiny bacteria known as acidophilus are moving around in the intestines and vaginal tracts of humans everywhere. Only it's not something to be worried about. Having the acidophilus bacteria in your body is normal and healthy. Acidophilus is what is called a good bacteria. It helps to create microbial substances that help to prevent disease and sickness due to a build up in bad bacteria, germs and fungi. Acidophilus can also be ingested, either in foods like yogurt or as a supplement. When it is taken in for medicinal or health reasons acidophilus falls in the category of a probiotic.

Common Ailments

Research is ongoing but scientist have reason to believe that acidophilus can be used to treat several fairly common maladies. Among these are diarrhea (this has the most clinical support) and yeast infection. Since acidophilus that occurs naturally is found in the intestines and vaginal areas of the body, this stands to reason.

More Severe Ailments

Acidophilus is thought to be beneficial in the treatment of other gastrointestinal disorders as well, including more serious conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, where gas pain and bloating are common, and infections due to the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which can cause ulcers.

Possible Benefits

Acidophilus and its ability to help in the digestive health of a person may have even further reaching effects. Because the cells in the digestive tract affect the immune system, it is theorized that good digestive health will affect the immune system in a good way.
