The spine has a natural "S" shape when you look at it from the side. This is commonly known as the "lordotic curve." Scoliosis is a condition that causes an unnatural lateral curvature of the spine. This condition generally starts at an early age, although in rare occasions, it can appear later in life. There are several treatment options available when it is diagnosed.
Check-ups
Often times the curvatures related to scoliosis are minor and they do not need any extensive treatment. Doctors will take x-rays and then just do periodic check-ups to monitor the curve and make sure it is not getting any worse. These are generally done every 4 to 6 months in children who are still growing.
Braces
When curvatures are in the 20- to 40-degree range, braces are often used. They are not intended to reverse the curve, but they can stop it from getting worse. One type of brace called a "low profile brace" fits under the clothes, and it surrounds the hips, back, chest and rib cage. A Milwaukee brace covers the whole torso, and it has a ring where the back of the head and chin can sit to remain steady.
Fusion
When the curvature is severe as in the case of 50 degrees or more, surgery is an option. Spinal fusion surgery is a procedure where vertebraes are roughened up to promote new bone growth. They are then held together by rods, wires and hooks. After a few months, the roughened-up bone grows back together making the spine straighter. The rods are left in to avoid having to do another operation.
Chiropractic
There are some alternative therapies that are also sometimes used to treat scoliosis. One of them is chiropractic manipulation where the hands are used to stretch the back muscles and loosen up tight vertebraes.
Exercise
Exercise is another type of treatment that cannot cure scoliosis, but it can help improve posture, it can strengthen muscles on the opposing side of the curvature, and it can also keep weight down. The exercises target the abs, upper back, arms and shoulders. Yoga is another type of exercise that utilizes holding of isometric contractions to stretch the muscles and improve posture.
