Saunas can be a relaxing way to receive many different health benefits, including skin cleansing, improved blood circulation and a strengthened immune system. However, if you use a sauna inappropriately you can cause damage to your body. Before using a sauna, it is important to consult your physician to see if your heart and body are healthy enough to withstand the heat and humidity. If your body is healthy enough to use a sauna, then they are very easy to use.

Using the Sauna

Step 1

Enter the sauna slowly and take a seat on the lowest bench. Move slowly to avoid getting lightheaded while in the sauna, as your blood vessels expand due to your lowered blood pressure.

Step 2

Pour hot water on the rocks as you start to feel comfortable with the heat inside the sauna. This creates steam. You will hear a hissing and popping sounds as you pour the water on, and will feel a rush of heat coming off the rocks. You can now enjoy the sauna for as long as you are comfortable.

Step 3

Step into a shower to cool down after using the sauna. You can also pour a bucket of water over yourself or jump into a pool to cool down as well. If you feel up for another round in the sauna, feel free, but otherwise grab your towel to dry off.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear as little clothes as you feel comfortable without in the sauna. Use hot water to pour onto the rocks as cold water will cool down the rocks, which will not create the steam you are looking for.
  • Don't eat or drink too much before entering the sauna, as your blood will be used for digestion rather than circulation. Avoid wearing metal jewelry that could get too hot in the sauna.
