Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to health and may be beneficial for the eyes and skin, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Supplementing with omega-3 fish oil has been used to treat and prevent various conditions ranging from macular degeneration to acne. These fatty acids can be added to the diet in several ways. Tuna, salmon and halibut are rich sources of omega-3 and fish oil capsules can be purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies, health food stores and even grocery stores.
Wound Healing & Burns
Omega-3 fatty acids can benefit the skin and are being used to treat individuals with severe burns. According to The UMMC, these fatty acids may help reduce inflammation and promote wound healing. In addition, research done on animals indicates that omega-3 fatty acids encourage a healthy level of proteins in the body, which is important for recovery from burns.
Skin Disorders
Skin disorders and conditions, such as psoriasis, photo dermatitis and even acne can be treated with various forms of omega-3 fatty acids. According to the UMMC, a clinical study revealed individuals with a skin disorder known as photo dermatitis, which causes sensitivity to sunlight, showed significantly less sensitivity to UV rays after consuming fish oil supplements. Another study showed improvements in individuals with a common skin disorder known as psoriasis. Those who supplemented with omega-3 (EPA) fared better than those who relied on medications alone. In addition, the UMMC claims many clinicians consider flaxseed, which contains omega-3 fatty acids, an effective treatment for acne.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration, an age-related eye condition that decreases sight and can cause blindness, may be preventable with omega-3 fatty acids. According to the UMMC, a questionnaire revealed the likelihood of developing this condition was reduced among those who consumed more fish in their diet.
