Restasis, an eye drop available only by prescription, increases tear production for people who have difficulty produces tears due to chronic dry eye. Allergan, Inc., the makers of Restasis note that the product does not work for people who use either tear duct plugs or anti-inflammatory eye drops. It may take up to six months before treatment works, according to Allergan, Inc. Further, you need to continue using the product for continued treatment results.

Step 1

Use Restasis twice a day with a 12 hour interval between doses, or as instructed by your doctor.

Step 2

Remove your contact lenses, if you wear them.

Step 3

Rotate a single-dose vial upside down a few times until the solution inside the vial appears white with no streaks.

Step 4

Wash your hands.

Step 5

Lean your head back, and use your index finger to hold your lower eyelid down. Insert one drop from the Restasis vial in one or both eyes as instructed by your doctor. Close your eyes momentarily.

Step 6

Press the inside corner of eyelid with your index finger for one to two minutes without blinking.

Step 7

Wipe away any excess drops of Restasis that drip outside the eye with a clean, dry tissue. Make sure not to touch your eye while wiping.

Step 8

Wash your hands to remove any traces of Restasis.

Step 9

Throw vial away. Vials are one-time use only and should not be stored or used after initial dosage.

Step 10

Wait 15 minutes after using Restasis to reinsert your contact lenses.

Step 11

Use Restasis until your doctor instructs you to stop.

Tips and Warnings

  • For the best results, use Restasis the same time each day, according to Drugs.com. Do not use artificial tears within 15 minutes of using Restasis.
  • Restasis should not be used if you have an eye infection. Side effects associated with the use of Restasis include discharge, pain, itching, burning in the eye, redness, tearing and visual blurring, according to Allergan, Inc.
