Difference Between an Indoor Cycling Bike & an Exercise Bike

The indoor cycling bike is very different from an exercise bike. Not only is the form and function of the bike different, but so is its purpose. Exercise bikes also come in two forms, upright and recumbent. Indoor cycling bikes build speed quite quickly, so you should use them with caution. Consult your physician before starting any exercise routine.

The Indoor Cycling Bike

Indoor cycling bikes are used to build speed and endurance. They are mainly used by athletes, competitive cyclists, or in classes held at the gym. The bike is built to replicate an actual bicycle. This way, the cyclist can get the same workout she would on the road, but since she is inside, weather is not a factor in her exercise routine.

The Exercise Bike

An exercise bike is designed for comfort. One common complaint about the indoor cycling bike is its comfort; the seat is narrow and the bars are low. Exercise bikes have padded seats and upright bars for added support. The recumbent bike takes the design for comfort to another level, adding a low seat with back support. If you are comfortable on your bike then you will stay on it longer and complete a more effective workout.

Electric

Most exercise bikes are electric. They have designed exercise plans for your fitness goals, displayed on a computerized monitor. Whether you are trying to burn fat, increase cardio or build endurance, there is an exercise plan for you. They also have settings that add resistance, creating the feeling that you are climbing up a hill. These bikes also monitor your heart rate, time, distance and caloric burn.

The indoor cycling bike, unlike an exercise bike, allows you to lift off the seat to an upright position, building your upper body strength. You can also set the resistance by turning a knob. When the resistance is at a high level, you can lift your body off of the seat to build endurance and muscle. The speed of the indoor cycling bike also increases rapidly, allowing you to enter your cardiovascular training zone. This bike is also easy to move from room to room, since it is not electric and not as heavy as an exercise bike.

Your Fitness Goals

If your goal is to build endurance and speed, or even train as a professional cyclist, then the indoor cycling is bike your best choice. If you are looking for a workout that allows you to exercise longer and efficiently, then the exercise bike would be a good fit for you. Both can give you a great workout and a high calorie burn.
