Paraffin baths are therapeutic treatments that use heat and wax to sooth arthritis and other ailments that affect the skin and bone tissue. This wax retains heat and dries to the shape of the coated object. Although the term "bath" would seem to indicate full body immersion, this is not the case. A paraffin bath is commonly used to relieve pain and increase range of motion in the hands and feet.

The wax is also used as a beauty product that cleans pores and increases skin hydration. Setting up a system at home that allows you to take a paraffin bath requires little money, equipment or time.

Step 1

Place three pounds of low-melt paraffin in a three quart crock pot. Set the crock pot to a medium and allow the paraffin to melt.

Step 2

Let the melted paraffin cool to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Place a candy thermometer into the wax and measure the temperature. Do not apply paraffin hotter than 125 degrees Fahrenheit to the body.

Step 3

Wash the affected area of your body with a mild cleanser and pat dry with a clean towel.

Step 4

Dip the affected body part into the paraffin and hold it over the pot. Let the wax stop dripping and then dip again. Dip to the same line as the first coating. For example, if treating your hand, dip your hand to the wrist with each coat of wax. Repeat this process five times, allowing the wax to stop dripping with each coat. You should have a total of six coats of paraffin.

Step 5

Leave the wax on for 20 minutes. Place the coated area over a towel and peel off the wax.

Step 6

Remelt the used wax and strain it through cheesecloth. Store the paraffin in a covered container.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 qt. crock pot
  • 3 lbs. low melt paraffin wax
  • Candy thermometer
  • Mild cleanser

  • Storage container
