Some children may find themselves excited by the thought of learning how to ride a bicycle, but daunted by the risk falling onto the hard ground. This fear of injury and embarrassment can serve as a distraction, making the learning process all the more difficult. By installing training wheels onto the bicycle, you can provide your child with a means of reassurance. SuperCycle produces a model of training wheels designed to serve this purpose; the installation process requires only a few basic hand tools.
Step 1
Insert the end of a shoulder bolt into one of the washers. Push the washer up against the head of the shoulder bolt. Insert the bolt into the hole set into the center of one of the training wheels. Place another washer onto the end of the bolt. Twist a nut onto the bolt until the wheel is positioned against the head of the bolt. Repeat with the remaining wheel.
Step 2
Insert the end of one of the shoulder bolts into the round hole at located at the end of the wheel brace. Place a washer and a nut over the end of the bolt; tighten the nut until the wheel is secured to the brace. Repeat with the remaining wheel.
Step 3
Remove the axle nut from one side of the rear wheel. Fit the small hole located on one end of the stabilizer bracket onto the wheel axle. Rotate the stabilizer bracket until the fork end is positioned over the lower portion of the bicycle frame.
Step 4
Fit the wheel brace onto the wheel axle. Position the brace such that the training wheel will rest approximately one inch above the ground when the bicycle is in use. Replace and tighten the axle nut. Repeat the installation process on the opposite side of the rear wheel with the remaining stabilizer bracket and wheel brace.
Tips and Warnings
- Elevate the training wheels enough to minimize the risk of them catching on the ground during a ride. If the training wheels fail to move smoothly when in use, you may find it necessary to loosen the nuts on one side of each wheel; alternatively, try applying a small amount of lubricant between the washers and the wheels.
- If the training wheels are set to an uncomfortable height after installation, loosen the axle nuts and shift each wheel brace to the desired position. Check that the all components of the training wheels are properly secured before attempting to take the bicycle out for a ride.
