Barspins are a core BMX trick. Flatland-style BMX riders mix up their routines with barspins; ramp and skate-park riders use barspins to put a flourish on their moves. Even dirt track BMX riders use the barspin in the middle of big air jumps. The basic aim of the barspin is to get your front wheel up for long enough to whip your front wheel round a full 360 degrees.

Step 1

Practice barspins on solid, flat ground before moving to ramps and jumps. Stand on the pedals and get the bike moving fairly slowly. Pull a short wheelie by yanking your handlebars and leaning back a little.

Step 2

Pull the right handlebar grip hard and let go so that the front wheel spins round to the right. Do this soon after the wheel leaves the ground. Let go of the bar with your left hand and let the entire front bar spin around fully.

Step 3

Push your left hand down as the bar revolves, ready to catch the turning left grip. Focus on your left hand and the left grip. Hold the grip with your left hand and drop your right hand onto the right grip.

Step 4

Practice the barspin on a ramp jump when you're comfortable spinning on flat ground. Hit a ramp at a medium pace to get a foot or more of air.

Step 5

Pull the bars round in midair, spinning the bar as soon as you leave the ramp. Grab the bar and aim the wheel straight as you land or you'll buckle when you hit the ground.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice spinning in both directions and decide which is most comfortable for you. Keep your knees pulled back so that you don't hit them with the spinning bar.
  • Helmets and pads are a must when trying this trick. You're guaranteed to fall at some stage, so make sure you're protected when you do.
