Many golfers never give a second thought to their golf grip. They grab the club, hold it tightly and put a swing on the ball. This is called the "grip it and rip it" philosophy. This may result in some spectacular shots but absolutely no consistency. In order to hit the ball correctly, you need to be tension-free when you grasp hold of the club and you cannot hold it with too much pressure.

Step 1

Allow your arms to hang loosely by your sides. There should be no tension in either of your arms.

Step 2

Place your club in your open left hand (for right-handed golfers). The club should be angled diagonally from your waist to the ground. Wrap your left hand around the golf grip so your hand is closed. There should still be no tension in your hand.

Step 3

Take your right hand and wrap it directly underneath your left hand. Look at both of your thumbs. They should be pointing down the shaft toward the club head.

Step 4

Place the small finger on your right hand in the gap between the forefinger and the middle finger of your left hand. This will give you the overlapping grip, which is the most popular grip in the game of golf.

Step 5

Align the club head behind the ball. Make sure the club head is aimed at the green or the target in the fairway where you want the ball to go.
